Chapter 5

Thor dragged himself up the stairs and let himself into the apartment at seven minutes to four in the morning. Three hours until he needed to wake Dag. He was so tired he ached.

He silently pushed the door open to the room that used to be an office, where he now had put a bed for Dag. He was sleeping soundly in colorful pajamas and with his dark hair tousled. A sob wanted to climb his throat, but he swallowed and tiptoed into the room.

Grabbing his phone, he sent a thank you to Bassel, put the alarm, and crawled in next to Dag. They never slept in the same bed, but Thor couldn’t make himself leave, and he was soon getting up again. He wrapped an arm around Dag and gently pressed him against his chest. A tear trickled down his cheek, but he ignored it.

They couldn’t go on like this. He couldn’t go on like this. He didn’t want to give up the nightclub, but he had to be there for Dag.

When the alarm went off, Thor could hardly make himself climb back up to consciousness. Dag stared at him in confusion. “Did you have a bad dream?”

Thor rolled out of bed, still dressed in yesterday’s clothes. “No, I was too tired to walk into my room once I’d checked on you.”

Dag huffed a laugh. “Tomorrow, I’m gonna go home with Bassel and spend the night.”

Thor tried to get his brain to wake up. “What?”

“It’s Friday—” Was it? Thor no longer knew which day it was. “—and Bassel said I could get up with him in the morning to make the soups and come with him here and work in the food cart.”

Thor stared. It would mean he could sleep, but was it irresponsible to let someone else look after his kid? He’d planned on calling Gina and asking if she could look after Dag, but not overnight. After school till evening. Though how he would look after Dag in the evening, he didn’t know. “I don’t know. Bassel isn’t a nanny, and—”

The pained look in Dag’s eyes made him snap his teeth together. “I’ll talk to him. If he says you can stay the night, you can stay the night.”

“He already did.”

Thor nodded. “Okay, but I’ll talk to him. Double check.” He took a deep breath. “What do you want for lunch today?” He didn’t have anything. He’d have to sneak downstairs to the kitchen and grab something, and then he needed to get to a grocery store before he had to be at work again.

“Bassel already packed lunch for me.”

The world stopped, and Thor had a silly notion to cry. “He packed you lunch?”

“Yes, pancakes, some carrot sticks, and an orange.”

He had to pay Bassel. Fumbling to get his phone out of his pocket, he was about to send another thank you text when he noticed that Bassel had replied to his last one.

It takes a village.

Thor stared at the words. Maybe Bassel was batshit after all.
